Why IV Hydration?

Recent research shows what many have long suspected. Proper hydration really can extend our lifespan, prevent illness, and stave off premature aging.* Dehydration, on the other hand, can be an urgent matter of life or death – that’s why IV saline bags are such a familiar sight in hospitals. When individuals become ill, sweat excessively while exercising, or engage in binge drinking, it’s essential to rehydrate. Yes, just drinking water will usually prevent things from getting dangerous but you may feel a great deal less than 100 percent for some time. There are many reasons why this is so. One of them might be that the water we drink must go through the stomach before it hits the bloodstream, slowing down recovery to a degree. Also, there’s more to staying well-hydrated and healthy than just simple H20.

For example, many people believe that hangovers are caused by dehydration. In fact, that “morning after” feeling is also the result of the havoc wreaked in the body when we recreationally poison ourselves. Adding the proper mix of nutrients and electrolytes to hydration has helped countless patients feel good enough to get right back to whatever they were doing – which hopefully won’t involve a lot of alcohol consumption!

Of course, not all dehydration is caused by too much fun. Heatstroke, stomach illnesses such as gastroenteritis, vomiting, and so on deplete our bodies not only of water but they can throw off the body’s crucial balance of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, etc.). This can become an emergency if neglected and it’s always a concern when we push ourselves too hard. We think hydration is a more powerful, rapid, and healthy solution than just Gatorade or coconut water.

When is Hydration Urgent?

In some situations, IV hydration may be administered on a more urgent basis or as an immediate therapy for a problem that has become more acute recently. These include:

  • Stomach flu and other gastrointestinal illnesses
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea due to any cause
  • Excessive sweating caused by physical exertion, drug reactions, etc.
  • Extended high fevers
  • Diabetes
  • Anti-aging and wellness

One note. If you think you or someone else may be suffering from an immediately life-threatening emergency due to very extreme dehydration, alcohol poisoning, or a drug overdose, you must always call 911 or rush to a nearby emergency room.

IV Hydration for Wellness

As we’ve said, staying healthy requires good hydration.

Acute issues aside, an increasing number of people are taking advantage of IV hydration to improve their overall health and vigor, or to deal with a variety of chronic medical problems.

Myers Cocktail

The Myers cocktail is a solution for more than too many ordinary cocktails. It is also the most popular option for people suffering from an array of acute and chronic conditions. Created by Dr. John Myers, its popularity has been growing for many decades.

Dr. Myers’ brainchild is a special saline solution containing several powerful electrolytes and nutrients. In addition to standard saline solution (salt water), a Myers Cocktail typically contains a highly specific combination of additives including magnesium, calcium, vitamin C, and the most important B vitamins. It also contains glutathione, which is believed to have a synergistic effect in combination with the other cocktail ingredients that can help the body deal with alcohol and other toxins.

Patients have found the Myers cocktail helpful for the following:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome/ordinary fatigue
  • Chronic pain
  • Drug withdrawal
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraine headaches
  • Severe colds and flu

How Often Should I Take a Myers Cocktail?

That’s a highly individual matter. In some cases, as in the treatment of hangovers, it’s an as-needed treatment. For chronic conditions, however, many patients find that taking it more regularly can be highly beneficial though some may prefer to wait for a non-emergent flare-up.

Others may benefit from a Myers vitamin drip for general wellness or fatigue and being run-down. Feel free to ask Dr. Farzam about the right strategy in your case.
